Wood inlay is a technique of inserting pieces of contrasting colors into hollowed out / grooved spaces to form a design. It involves engraving foliage patterns, and simple everyday designs are inlaid with either acrylic, plastic, bronze or camel bone. The technique is based on the contrast between the various shades of color of the wooden dowels, different varieties are combined with acrylic, ivory, tortoise shell, etc.
At New Matharu Ivory Art Emporium, we offer periodically different workshop training programs to help penchant learners' expertise and know the basic of inlay arts. The only thing to keep in mind before joining is that this course is not meant for the beginners. One should have the basic knowledge of interior designing, wood working and furniture making beforehand.
During the workshop you will be trained to use various tools necessary for making of design pieces from acrylic sheets, drawing on wood pieces, wood carving, grooving and afterwards inlaying the same with acrylic.
First of all the raw design of the artefact or the furniture is created and afterwards the same is carved and prepared for inlay work.
Our expert team has a bent for wood carving especially inlaying of acrylic and we love to teach it to those who plummet for handmade artefacts. Our workshops are designed for aspiring professional furniture makers and dedicated designers who seek in-depth training in inlay work with a high standard of excellence.
During the course students are taught about the complete life cycle of artefact concocting.
The initial step includes cutting of shapes from wood slices, giving them shapes as per required design, tracing of designson wood, grooving in the area and inlay etc. For Tracing, the pattern to be inlaid is drawn on a piece of paper. Same is then traced on wood pieces using ink. Etching is then done on wood one by one with tools such as hammers, sharp knives and chisels. This results in the creation of grooves or gaps in the wood. A craftsman gouges the areas of the wooden surface that are to be inlaid with acrylic. Acrylic pieces are then cut with the sharp knives of same designs as per pattern and then placed one by one into the gaps made.
The piece inlaid then glued with a special mixture made from wood dust, then smoothened with sandpaper and polished in Lac.
In our training programs and courses available for 1 week and 2 weeks, participants get hands-on experience at cutting a full range of essential woodworking joints with hand tools.
On the completion of the workshop the students are awarded with the certificates.
